How to Turn On Flash Alerts for Calls and Notifications on Android

Flash alerts make your phone's camera LED blink when a call or notification arrives, which is useful in loud places, in silent mode, and for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many phones have a basic version built in, and apps add more control.

Use the built-in setting

  1. Pixel and most Android 14+ phones. Open Settings > Accessibility > Flash notifications and turn on Camera flash.
  2. Samsung Galaxy. Open Settings > Accessibility > Advanced settings > Flash notification and turn on Camera flash notification.
  3. Test it. Use the Preview button, then ask someone to call you.

Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for flash.

When you need more than the built-in option

Set up Flash Alert: Call & Flashlight

  1. Allow camera and phone permissions. The camera permission controls the LED and the phone permission detects incoming calls.
  2. Switch on Incoming Call and SMS. Then enable notification access and pick the apps that can trigger a light alert.
  3. Adjust and test your pattern. Set blink count, length, and off time, and test it before you rely on it.

Why the flash may not blink

Your phone needs a rear camera flash. Some manufacturers stop apps running in the background to save battery, so allow the app to run in the background in battery settings.

Frequently asked questions

Do flash alerts drain the battery?

The LED uses little power for short blinks. Use battery saver settings to stop alerts below a level you choose.

Do flash alerts work when the phone is locked?

Yes. Alerts work on the lock screen and in silent mode.
