How to Recover Deleted Photos on Android: What Works

Deleted a photo by mistake? Act quickly, because new data can overwrite deleted files. Most deleted photos on Android can be restored from a trash folder in the first 30 days. This guide covers where to look first and what a recovery app can realistically do after that.

Step 1: Check the trash

  1. Google Photos. Open Library > Trash (or Collections > Trash). Backed-up items stay for 60 days, and items that were not backed up stay for 30 days. Select the photo and tap Restore.
  2. Samsung Gallery. Open the menu and tap Recycle bin. Photos stay for 30 days.
  3. Files by Google. Open the menu and tap Trash. Deleted files stay for 30 days.

Step 2: Check your backups

If you use Google Photos backup, OneDrive, Dropbox, or Samsung Cloud, the photo may still be in that account even if it is gone from the phone. Sign in on the web to check.

Step 3: Scan with a recovery app

If the trash has been emptied, a recovery app can scan storage for files that are still readable: copies in other folders, thumbnails, cached images saved by apps, and files on SD cards. Results depend on your phone, storage type, and how long ago the photo was deleted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover photos deleted years ago?

Usually not, unless they are still in a cloud backup. Old deleted files are almost always overwritten.

Do I need root to recover deleted photos?

No. Recovery apps can scan storage that Android allows apps to read without root.
