How to Find Which App Is Causing Popup Ads on Android

If full-screen ads appear on your home screen, lock screen, or on top of other apps, one of your installed apps is almost always responsible. These apps often hide their icon or use a generic name. Here is how to track down the source and remove it.

Step 1: Check which app the ad belongs to

When the ad appears, open Recent apps (swipe up and hold, or tap the square button). The app that just showed the ad often appears in the list. Long-press its icon and tap App info to see its name.

Step 2: Review recently installed apps

Popup ads usually start right after installing something new, such as a free game, flashlight, cleaner, wallpaper, or VPN app. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture > Manage apps & device > Manage, and sort by recently updated or installed.

Step 3: Check powerful permissions

  1. Display over other apps. Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps. Turn it off for apps that do not need it.
  2. Device admin apps. Settings > Security > Device admin apps. Unknown entries here can prevent an app from being uninstalled.
  3. Accessibility. Settings > Accessibility > Installed apps. Turn off services you do not recognize.

Step 4: Test in Safe mode

Press and hold the power button, then press and hold Power off and tap OK to restart in Safe mode. Safe mode disables downloaded apps. If the ads stop, a downloaded app is the cause. Restart normally to leave Safe mode.

Step 5: Uninstall and scan

Uninstall the suspicious app, then open Google Play Store > profile picture > Play Protect and run a scan.

Find the source automatically with Popup Ad Detector

Popup Ad Detector: App Finder by Elevate Mobile Group lists hidden apps without launcher icons, apps with powerful permissions, and recently installed apps in one place. Optional live detection notes which app jumped in front of you when a popup appeared, so the next ad has a name. Analysis runs on your phone.
